Rochester Marathon 2018

On Sunday, September 23rd the Rochester Marathon will make its way through Irondequoit. Over the past few weeks we have been getting information form the race organizers about the impact on coming and going from the neighborhood on that morning, the route and how to get involved.

Runners will be using the South bound lanes of Thomas Avenue and St. Paul Boulevard as they make their way through Irondequoit a map of the full course can be seen here. According to the organizers, in and out access to the side streets may restricted during the morning hours as runners make their way through our community. However, volunteers from our town neighborhood associations and Yellow Jacket Racing as well as officers from the Irondequoit Police Department will be stationed at various intersections to make sure everyone stays safe.

Based on the information we have we are advising that Winona Woods residents utilize Winona Blvd as a North/South route during the morning to avoid the boulevard. When crossing or rejoining St. Paul is necessary we suggest using the intersection at Titus Ave.

Now for the fun stuff

This race should bring a huge crowd of runners right through our beautiful neighborhood which makes this a terrific opportunity to showcase our community.

There are three ways to get involved:

One:

Yellow Jacket Racing is organizing a neighborhood competition for the best cheering section with cash prizes. So we are calling everyone and anyone to show up along the west side of St. Paul Blvd and show their community spirit. Wear turquoise to show your Winona Woods Pride, grab some pots and pans to bang, make some posters, dust off your pom-poms and get ready. We are trying to assemble the biggest and best cheering section in the whole race!

Two:

Help the runners get a chance to think of something other than how much longer they have to go through self-imposed suffering. In addition, this year Winona Woods will be teaming up with the nearby Seneca, Nowadoga, Briarwood, NoLA, Rogers Orchard and Parkside Neighborhood Associations to make an even bigger impact!

Winona Woods and other neighborhood associations along St. Paul Blvd. will be hosting a “Back to School Theme” so show your I-Town pride with yellow and gold, WICSD Sports Gear or otherwise.

At the end of the race, the runners will vote on the best community display and the our Irondequoit Team is up against groups from all over the county. First place is $800. If the Irondequoit Neighborhoods Team wins the prize money it will be distributed proportionally to each participating association in respect to the number of volunteers each neighborhood has registered to help at the event!

Please! If you have a lawn on the Boulevard or disney decor props or costumes you can pitch in with just mark your items clearly with your name/address and drop them off at the appropriate locations (To be announced) to help bring this event to life. At the end of the day please come pick it back up!

We are also looking for volunteers to man the water station and/or manage safe crossing for runners at the smaller side street entrances and act as road marshals along St. Paul Blvd. from 7:30 AM -2:30 PM.

No matter how you wish to contribute, we hope to see you there. Let’s show our visitors what our community is all about!
