Winter Safety Tips

By Gail Hoins

Hello Neighbors,

Looking out my window today it occurred to me that just a few weeks ago it was reported that our area was behind normal snowfall by around half!   Looks to me like February is not going to be so nice! I am actually getting tired of shoveling that white stuff. Oh well, I could still be living in Nebraska where the temperatures have been way below zero and they also have lots of snow. So enough about my sore arms, back, etc. – let’s talk about winter safety.

The CDC has some good information for staying safe and healthy in the winter (see link below):

  • Prepare Your Home
  • Prepare Your Vehicle
  • Prepare for Emergencies
  • Take Precautions Outdoors
  • Do This When You Plan to Travel

In addition to CDC safety tips there also some winter rules we all must following which are on the Town of Irondequoit’s website:

“Like many towns and villages in Monroe County, Irondequoit prohibits parking on public roadways or grass on right-of-ways annually from November 1st through April 15th from Midnight to 9am. The ordinance is in effect to make plowing and salting of dedicated streets within the Town safer and more effective, cutting the cost of snow removal and saving tax dollars. “

Here are some other courtesy tips:

  • try not to park on both sides of the street to allow for emergency and service vehicles easy access.
  • keep your sidewalks clear of snow/ice.
  • watch out for children play and all the folks out walking or running!
  • keep the speed down when driving – hard to stop when snow packed or icy!
